With the next possible date, we are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Policy and Business Development Manager to join the global Thieme science business unit.

Responsibilities

  • Management - Functional line management of (associate) project managers.
  • Shape and facilitate execution of the Thieme science strategy ‘Commit to Open Access’ - Create and facilitate a framework allowing you and key stakeholders to identify, deploy, implement, maintain service and business policies relevant to provide a sustainable and scalable science business, incl. open access. Streamline and supervise vendors’ activities/policies.
  • Product framework - Work with global product teams (journal publishing, sales) and other stakeholders defining general business frameworks and publishing service standards. Challenge and influence decisions; focusing on customer and business value.
  • Project and implementation management - Act as project manager for a variety of initiatives across the science article value stream. Manage these cross-functional projects against set timelines and deliverables.
  • Communication - Create reports and overviews/presentations/ documentation for internal and external use according to determined frameworks and standards. Confidentially present and discuss defined policies/ processes with customers and key stakeholders.
  • Process orientated mindset - End-to-end value-stream mapping, maintaining and analysis of global open access process.
  • Performance monitoring - Work with stakeholders to set-up and regularly report on overall open access performance (commercial, quality, compliance) KPIs. Benchmark performance; identify and trigger actions when standard is not met.
  • Continuous improvement - Work on continuous improvement and efficiencies across the end-to-end science article value stream: identify areas to improve performance in line with quality standards, business and customer requirements.
  • Customer centric mindset / compliance - Collect and study industry mandates/ general needs, feedback from customers, and stakeholders to shape policy and requirements and identify areas of action and improvement. Act as second line query support for open access related matters and ensure first-line support documentation is created, deployed, and updated.
  • Relationship building - Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure optimal performance. Communicate and present science article publishing services, incl. open access, internally and externally.
  • Global stakeholders - Close, coordinated collaboration with Science Journal Publishing teams located in Stuttgart, London, New York, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, New Delhi, and Beijing as well as with colleagues in Production, Marketing, Institutional Sales etc.

Qualifications

  • 3 years proven academic journal and open access publishing experience: in particular, OA funding and policy development. Background on working on author, institutional, and funder requirements
  • Experienced Project Manager with track record heading cross-functional projects with global stakeholders
  • Fluent in English (both written and spoken)
  • Ability to quickly understand different workflows, systems, their dependencies, and interaction
  • Strong presentation skills, including expertise to present research and analysis
  • Experienced at framing problems. You are skilled at unearthing the root cause(s) of pain points and validate business opportunities and problems.
  • Innovative and action-oriented mindset with strong execution capabilities and ability to succeed
  • Self-starting, high degree of independence
  • High tolerance for ambiguity, strong prioritization skills, and the ability to work well with a large variety of personalities at all levels of business
  • International and cultural sensitivity as well as working experience in an international business or environment
  • Flexibility to travel when needed
